The forgotten victims on Greenland

Faksimile Sermitsiaq Uke 42

Juaanna Platou and her husband, Qillaq Danielsen, lost their beloved Athina last summer. The two years old girl was bitten by dogs. Neither the hospital nor the government explained to them how she died and what effect it may have had that it took four hours before she got medical help.

– I think that little Athina could have been saved. Loss of life due to lack of doctors and communication is unacceptable. On North Greenland you are forced to survive on your own when accidents happens, because the system is so bad, says Juaanna Platou.

Juaanna Platou now wants debate about the lack of support services on North Greenland and the lack of resources available for people who are sick and injured.

Extract from the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq, week 42.

Really great article! I agree that the natives needs more attention. It is hard for the natives keep in touch with a doctor, when they not even has a telephone. A solution for this problem is employing doctors in the north west Greenland.

This is so sad. It’s good someone write about this. Hopefully someone will take action!

It is sad to read about this girl. I think this could have ended differently if they worked better with the communication and builded hospitals. The healthcare in the nothern Greenland does not have to be this bad. They can improve it, so people can be less sick and live longer.

It is sad to read about this girl being bit by dogs and die because the healthcare in this part of Greenlang is bad. I think they should focus on improving the system they have. They should find a way to improve the transport from the place things happen to the hospital where people who are hurt can get help. I am sure it can be done in a better way than what is described in this article, the healtcare just have to communicate better with each other to make it happen.

I think the government should do something about this situation. They should send more doctors to Greenland, so people can get help if they get ill. They should also get more hospitals or small healthcare-stations. Then when a crisis happens, there will be equipment and paople that can help.
