Making Thread from Narwhal

Louise Simigaq Duneq is a skilled sewer from Avanersuag. The American polar explorer Matthew Henson is her great-great grandfather. On the photo she is making thread from the spinal tendon in narwhal (Monodon monoceros). This traditional idea is ingenious and simple. The thread from narwhal is expanding in water. The Polar Eskimoes use this thread to sew waterproof products.
